Kickers Duels!

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

I'll start with one from Week #15, 1990, and let you all either "up" me or simply just bring up other, also, significant ones.

AnderOn - vs - AndersEn! Yes, Gary vs Morten! The Steelers, by now, were relatively out of their early offensive Walton slump. Joe making things simple enough for Bubby & Co. But this match-up was a defensive slugfest; and Steelers were #1 in the league! Gary 9, Morten 6; and Steelers now at 8-6 would be in the drivers-seat for the division title/playoff berth which they, thanks to Cody Carlson on the final Sunday Night, would not achieve! And the father of a current Steeler DT played RB for NO in that very match!

So what other such Duels can you think of? Both kickers being the only ones to score!

Two teams with star studded offenses got all their points from FG’s (Chris Boniol and a rookie Adam Vinatieri) in a 12-6 Dallas division clincher

11/14/76 - N.Y. Giants 12 vs. Washington Redskins 9 (Joe Danelo 4 vs. Mark Mosely 3). This was the first time the Giants had beaten a George Allen coached team. Allen came into the game with a 14-0 record against them as head coach.

11/5/79 - Houston Oilers 9 @ Miami Dolphins 6 (Tony Fritsch vs. Uwe von Schamann). This Monday night affair was nothing like the 35-30 shootout played at the Astrodome in 1978.

1/13/07 - AFC Divisional Playoff: Indianapolis Colts 15 @ Baltimore Ravens 6 (Adam Vinatieri vs. Matt Stover). Vinatieri is a perfect 5 for 5 and moves ahead of Gary Anderson for the most post-season field goals in NFL history.

Monday Night Football, October 17th, 1983. Reigning Super Bowl champion Washington Redskins (4-1) head to Green Bay (3-2) for what turns out to be a scoring fest.

Mark Mosley - a Pro Bowler in ‘82 and the last straight-on kicker in the league - is kicking for the Redskins. Jan Stenerud - eventual Pro Football, Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers HoF inductee and one of the early soccer-style kickers of the pro football - is kicking for the Packers.

In a thrilling back-and-forth, high-scoring game, Mosley is 3/3 and Stenerud is 4/4 on extra points through three quarters. And Mosley is 4/4 and Stenerud 1/1 on field goal attempts as well as the Redskins hold a 33-31 lead with 15 minutes of regulation time remaining.

In that fourth final quarter, both teams score touchdowns and both kickers stay perfect on extra points (now, Mosley is 5/5 and Stenerud is 6/6 on extra points) and the Redskins are up 47-45.

In the final minute of regulation, Stenerud connects on a 20-yard field goal to lift the Packers to a 48-47 lead, leaving 54 seconds on the clock for Washington. The Redskins march down the field into Green Bay territory and Mosley comes in to attempt a game-winning field goal with three seconds left on the clock.

Wide right. Packers win the highest-scoring game in MNF history.
