Weird stuff with 1975 Denver helmets

Post by Evan »

The 1975 opening day game between Denver and Kansas City had two peculiar helmet incidents with the Broncos:

1. Rookie Rick Upchurch, playing in his first game, apparently had his helmet split in the first quarter and had to wear a pure blue helmet with no stripes or logo for a while until they found another one for him.

2. Haven Moses took a hellacious shot from I believe it was Jim Kearney that shattered his facemask into several pieces, which spun through the air like white plastic fireworks. This play would be replayed forever in today's league, however I don't even know if a penalty was called on the play, I don't believe there was.

Anyone know any more about these two anecdotes?
