Notable Bengals/Cowboys games

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

Not a very common pairing, but in light of today's matchup in Big D (on TV now as I write - Beasley just scored, Dallas up 21-0), what historic games between these two franchises come to mind? Of course Paul Brown (as Browns' HC) and Tom Landry met five times from '60-thru-'62 with the former winning the first four meetings, Landry getting the last laugh in their second '62 contest (both also played twice in '61). As for Brown's time with Cincy, both met just once in '73 with Big D schlacking them at home, 38-10, in Week #8 dropping Bengals to 4-4 but prompting Cincy to win the rest of their regular-season games to a 10-4 division title (Dallas would make it to yet another NFCC-berth). Of course there's the game-that-never-was such as SBXVI along with what also didn't take place the following year. No, first game at Cincy would have to wait another three years. If 44-0 three weeks prior wasn't bad enough, Bengals open-up a 22-0 first quarter lead and would have finished with 57 points (to 24) had Wyche not generously sat on the Dallas-1 end of game. Of course there's Jeff Blake's 'false-alarm' of a 'coming-out-party' nine years later.

Back to '85, I mosied on over to Pro Football Referrence to see the boxscore. Something interesting popped up - James Brooks' TD to put Cincy up to that 22-0 lead says in parenthesis, 'pass failed'. Obviously no 2-pt-conversions back then. PAT blocked? Attempted-pass to endzone made?
