I must be really out of the loop (or loopy). But when the #$%%#@! did Michael Vick become Mike Vick???

Probably around the same time he said things like, "No matter what happens, people gonna support Mike Vick."
In psychological circles they call this a lack of self awareness.

He started out as Michael Vick, and then for a season or so he changed it to Mike Vick around the time of the Ron Mexico debacle and went back to Michael Vick around the time of the dog thing. As far as I know he's been Michael ever since.

It would be weird if he wanted people to start calling him Frank or Mortimer.

Well, Frank is okay, but not Mortimer. I'm sure he'd prefer to be called Mort.
