than Peyton Manning the other day?

Perhaps you are right - for those who like to dwell on the negative aspects of accomplishment simply because they have
a more favored horse in the race.
For years, the battered and bleeding Y.A. on his knees was the end-all of negative photojournalism.
Tittle grew to like it - so much so that he used it on the cover of his book.
Manning's legacy will live long after the naysayers have thrown their spiteful barbs and faded to oblivion.

I guess I didn't phrase my opening statement well. I didn't mean to criticize Peyton
I just thought it very ironic that in possibly his worst game ever he set a significant
positive record and wondered if a similar situation had ever happened.

I don't think you phrased it poorly, and I don't think of it as excessively negative. There are lots of interesting conversations here, and some of them include negative parts of the game.
On the old website, I started a thread entitled "Worst ending to a career." My choice was my boyhood hero, Jim Kelly. On his final play, Jim fumbled (twice!) losing the second one (which set up the Jacksonville go-ahead FG) and he suffered a concussion.
Regarding your post, I really can't think of a worse record-breaking performance. Peyton's day was really bad. Which does nothing to diminish his legacy. I think of all the sports legends who went to a new team after 30 (Mays, Ruth, Jordan, Rice, Emmitt, Unitas, Montana,) Peyton had the most successful stint with his new team. Even if you took out his MVP season, the two surrounding seasons were still excellent.
