NFL Senior Finalists Question

Post by Shrevedude »

Does anyone remember any of the Senior Candidate Finalists that have been considered since 2013 that are not on this list? I got this list from some web site:

RG – Jerry Kramer 5/3/60’s (finalist 2012, 2013)
G – Bob Kuechenberg 2/6/70s-80s (finalist 2012, 2013)
C – Mick Tingelhoff 5/6/60’s-70’s (finalist 2012, 2013)
LT – Jim Tyrer 6/9/60-70’s (finalist 2012)
QB – Ken Anderson 3/4/70s-80s (finalist 2012)
WR – Cliff Branch 4/4 – 70s-80s (finalist 2012, 2013)
RDT – Roger Brown 2/6/60’s (finalist 2012, 2013)
LDE – L.C.Greenwood 2/6/70’s (finalist 2013)
DE – Claude Humphrey 5/6/70s (finalist 2012, 2013)
DT – Alex Karras 0/4 60s (finalist 2012)
RLB – Maxie Baughan 2/9/60’s (finalist 2012)
MLB – Tommy Nobis 1/5/60’s-70’s (finalist 2012)
LLB – Chuck Howley 5/6/60’s-70’s (finalist 2012, 2013)
LB- Mike Curtis 2/4/60s-70s (finalist 2012, 2013)
CB/S – Eddie Meador 2/6/60’s (finalist 2012, 2013)
CB – Lester Hayes 1/5/70s 80s (finalist 2012)
S – Johnny Robinson 6/7/60’s (finalist 2012, 2013)
FS – Cliff Harris 3/6/70’s (finalist 2012, 2013)
P – Ray Guy 6/7/70s-80s (finalist 2012, 2013)

Also, was Jim Tyrer really a finalist in 2012? I remember seeing the list of finalists, and I don't recall his name being on there. I am shocked the HOF would have any interest in inducting him, due to the way he ended his life.

If memory serves, Tyrer has been a Senior finalist before, though I don't remember the year.

Note that the PFHoF does not have a character clause, so anything off-field (no matter how bad) technically is not fair game to consider. In practice, it may make a difference sometimes, but it's not supposed to.

That website is a little off. Can't really say more than that.

That is a little frustrating that the web site is off. However, I will probably continue to go by it, since it is all I really have to go by.

I e-mailed some of the senior voters with my question, and one of them got back to me and told me that Lavie Dilweg was considered in recent years for the Senior Candidacy, so I will add him to the list.

I could have sworn when I took a look at the list in 2013 on this board (though I was stupid enough not to copy it down somewhere on my computer) that Mac Speedie, and I THINK Al Wistert were considered. Am I right?

Also, have any names that just in the past couple of years transitioned to the senior candidacy from the modern-era candidacy made it to the finalists?

Tyrer has never been a finalist, though he may have been under consideration at some point. That may have been just to avoid having to hear about how they were pre-judging him on (notorious) off-the-field issues.

Check the list of those threads copied from the old forum. Scroll back to find it.
If it is not there, perhaps it is among those not yet posted. We'll see...

Thanks for the info, Ken.

I didn't see either of those names on the links you posted a while back, Old Cape Cod, though I may be wrong.

Speedie was nominated in 1983, but obviously didn't get elected, the only senior candidate from 1981-87 to suffer that fate. Since Paul Brown was still around in a prominent role with the Bengals, I wondering if his still-raging animosity toward Speedie was enough to sway enough voters.

Here are the senior nominees that have been nominated and still await election:

1972-Ole Haugsrud
1979 & 2008-Marshall Goldberg
1983-Speedie
1988-Lou Rymkus
1992-Willie Galimore
1993 & 2012-Dick Stanfel
1997-Jerry Kramer

The way Shrevedude is using the word "finalist" in his initial post, Tyrer would qualify as one -- and so would Chuck Howley, Maxie Baughan, etc.

Tyrer actually was a regular-candidate finalist in 1981, but he hasn't ever been one of the Senior Nominee Finalists (as Mick Tingelhoff was last year).
