Charley Scales Has Died
He died June 18th in Pittsburgh, PA


Born - January 11, 1938 · Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.
Died - June 18, 2023 (aged 85) · Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.
Position - Running back
Height - 5 ft 11 in (180 cm)
Weight - 210 lb (95 kg)
College - Indiana

He was added to the Browns via a Trade with the Steelers prior to the 1962 exhibition season for one of Cleveland's two 1963 fifth round draft picks

(the Browns had acquired a second fifth round pick in a trade with Detroit)
In four seasons with the Browns, Scales rushed for 338 yards, scoring four touchdowns. He caught 10 passes for 97 yards.

He left the Browns on August 23, 1966 to Atlanta (The Falcons were an expansion Team) for a draft choice

I recall a Sport Magazine article (in 1964 I think) about Charley Scales titled, "Me and Jimmy Brown." The theme was what it was like being Jimmy Brown's understudy, which was the term used. In the 1962 season Scales lined up at halfback alongside Brown for a few games, but was replaced at the position by Ernie Green. Charley Scales was the Browns' second-string FB during 1963-65.
