That procedure has not been officially announced yet but expect it to occur sometime in July... People have been sending in nicknames for awhile.
I think there are good names that have not yet been chosen for NFL teams that the USFL used, like Stallions and Stars and the Denver Gold (How about the San Diego Gold?), and the WFL had the Blazers, which I always thought was a good name. There are a couple others out there like Cougars and Bulldogs and Cobras and Wildcats and Dragons. I just hope they don't go the XFL route with names like Xtreme and Maniax and Hitmen and Rage.

Yesterday the AAF announced player allocation to the 8 teams.

1) Players are assigned to the teams by college. Most local schools in the teams area. Each of the 8 franchises were given a list of colleges that they hold the rights to. Any player released in NFL preseason belongs to the respective team who has rights to players from that school. No schools were chosen in the Big 10 (except Illinois and Northwestern) no schools in the BIG 12 (except Texas Tech) and no schools in the ACC.

2) Those players who attended one of the schools not assigned players will be distributed by NFL/CFL team. Each of the 8 franchises were given 4 NFL and 1 CFL team that they receive the rights to any player released from that team during preseason that does not fall into rule 1.

Interesting...
Does the San Diego Franchise have "rights" to USC and UCLA graduates?

Is their pool of four NFL teams the four California teams (49ers, Rams, Raiders, Chargers)?

More importantly, is there a link to these pressing issues?
Or do I have to keep bombarding you with questions? :)

Looks like an anti-trust suit waiting to happen.

Weird that UW (w/BC), WSU and Seattle are part of 3 different teams.

There are a lot of "mix-ups" that seem intentional. Perhaps to ensure no one team gets a surplus of talent?
USC and Stanford go to San Diego but Salt Lake gets Cal while Phoenix gets UCLA.
Makes about as much sense geographically as the old NFC West alignment (when it had 5 teams)...

I am thinking these teams might be at an advantage:

I wonder how in blue blazes they came up with these allocations.
Geographical? I am skeptical...

Break up San Diego! With all those players from Azusa Pacific and Humboldt State they'll be unbeatable!

There are some notable absences from the list of colleges assigned (for instance, Big Ten schools like Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan), the idea perhaps being that there may be a franchise someday in Columbus or Milwaukee. On the other hand, they don't seem to have learned from the mistake that the USFL made of assigning Oklahoma U. to a club's territory (in this instance, San Antonio). The New Jersey Generals had the rights to OU players back in 1983-- when the Oklahoma Outlaws got a franchise in '84, the Generals owner (who later went on to other things) wouldn't yield when the Outlaws wanted to have first pick of Sooners players.
