The group of Modern-Era players along with contributors and coaches will be formally enshrined on Saturday, Aug. 8.

The 10 seniors will take center stage in the once-in-every-other-lifetime Centennial Celebration in Canton on Sept. 16-19, 2020 when they are enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

It appears that Art Modell figures to get in through this back door, considering the voter who was considered largely responsible for swaying the past votes against him (Cleveland sportswriter Tony Grossi) has no say in this--while Ozzie Newsome (who's avidly pushed for Modell's induction) will have a vote.

And following this travesty Benedict Arnold will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom....

Just to be asking, will Carroll Rosenbloom ever make the HOF?

Numbers broken down further (for Modell) that show the post-Paul Brown record from 1963-69, and from the merger to the move (1970-95):

1963-69: 72-31-2 (including postseason)

1970-95: 198-205-3 (including postseason)

By 1970, most of the players and staff that had been "Paul Brown people" were gone. Mentioning that the stellar record in the 60's was largely due to the fact that Brown-connected people were still handling things was always an easy way to get Modell upset.

Of course, logic seems to be disappearing from the selections in all of the HOF's. The fact that Jerry Jones is somehow a HOFer for having won three Super Bowls with Jimmy Johnson's people--and the Cowboys have done nothing since is probably the best analogy to figuring out if they let Modell in.

Modell supporters will throw in the role he played in TV negotiating--as if Pete Rozelle had no say in the process. The presumed basis for putting Modell on that committee was because he had some TV background--producing daytime TV shows.

Finally, Rosenbloom's gambling history is presumably the reason that he's never been a strong contender for the HOF, and even though the NFL's greed has softened that position somewhat, they probably aren't looking to dredge up that past to induct a guy who's been dead for 40 years.

I think Modell's contributions negotiating TV contracts make him a much better candidate for the HOF than, say, Art Rooney or Pat Bohlen or Jerry Jones.

While popular opinion should never influence a HOF vote, Cleveland fans may riot if Art is elected.
