Am I the only one who prefers the previous way NFL Network announced it? Had all the info (the cutdowns from 15, 10, 5, then who was selected) then you would see the new HOF'ers that were in town sprinting across town to get to the stage and there was interviews and the raw emotion. Really good stuff.

I understand the NFL wanting to tie it in with their award show and the hype that goes with it, but they literally could be doing both. The afternoon HOF announcement and interviews as it was, then what they do now having them all come out to be recognized together at NFL Honors. Didn't have to be one way or the other.

Owens perceived attitude with the media should be irrelevant to his accomplishments on the field. We're not talking about a murderer, someone who beat women, or did drugs. He wasn't nice to the media. Big deal. These sportswriters shouldn't be making it about themselves. It's about the player. Owens is a top 5 receiver of the modern era, and his numbers back it up. Just watch Hines Ward get in before him because he was "nice".

I don't remember Owens being difficult with the media. The problem with him was childish team-hurting behavior and a lot of dropped passes. He's got just enough warts to have to wait a few years.
How did he hurt his team when he was putting up All Pro numbers every single season? Would you rather have a worse player on your team that doesn't produce, but is "nice"? Not sure if serious. He didn't have the greatest hands, but his other attributes far outweighed that setback. That would be like criticizing Cris Carter because he wasn't as fast or didn't jump as high. At the end of the day Owens made plays and was arguably the best receiver in the football in his prime. He was on the All Decade team even.

And it really depends on who you ask in regards to him being a good teammate or not. It's definitely not a consensus opinion.

Meanwhile you got Favre in on first ballot who is maybe a top 10 QB of all time. But he held the Packers hostage for three years about, threw a ton of interceptions in big games, had a drug problem, and was embroiled in off the field controversy like sending pictures of a his junk to a female reporter. But oh, let him in the HOF because "I'd have a beer with that guy".

LIke I said, the HOF is beyond ridiculous at this point. Oh and Morten Anderson? Career 79% kicking percentage. Missing every 5th kick now would get you cut in the NFL. Maybe it was a different era for kickers in his time, whatever.

On page 1 of this thread (you can look it up), I advocated Owens for induction.

He got kicked off a team for crying out loud.

Look, there is no way he will not eventually get in, so it is sort of cool he gets to stew for a while.

As for Andersen, yes, different era. You kind of have to compare his stats to players in his era. If you don't do that, then guys like Jan Stenerud, Bobby Layne, Joe Namath, Doak Walker, and Charlie Sanders could be made to look like pieces of crap depending upon what stats you look at.

Made me think that we haven't yet had anyone this year (2017) who ONLY looks up stats come on the forums to say how bad Layne was. Sure it'll happen, since it's happened every year since at least 2010.

Amazing that Boselli jumped past Jacoby. Both Jacoby and Coryell were in the final 10 last year. TO not getting past the first cutdown is also a little surprising; maybe the voters are indeed a little grumpy about his whining and making him pay for it.

I do recall when Paul Warfield wasn't deemed HOF-worthy because he didn't catch enough passes.

You're right, it was a different time. Adjusted for era, Andersen is among the five best all time in FG percentage. And at least Andersen will finally join Stenerud and Groza in, who are also among that group. Sad to say, we'll probably never say the same for the other two, Gary Anderson and Nick Lowery.

How is Ty Law getting this much consideration?

Parrish, Hayes, Wright, Barnes are all better choices, IMO.

One thing that may have helped Jason Taylor get in was the fact that he had no LB/DL competition. There may have been some significant logjamming going on with TO/Bruce, Law/Lynch/Dawkins, and the four O-linemen.

Glad to see both Easley and Davis making it in in the same class, with Stanfel of course getting in a year ago. Those three guys, if I'm not mistaken, are the entirety of the 7-years-and-under modern era career length contingent elected since Doak Walker in the mid-'80's. Gives me hope for players like Sterling Sharpe someday :). Not to mention Tony Boselli and Patrick Willis, who only played 8 seasons, and Priest Holmes, arguably a quasi-short career guy due to all the injuries.
