The Cardinals hired Jen Welter as an assistant coaching intern for training camp and the preseason to work with inside linebackers. The article (below) and other media report that she is believed to be the first female coach of any kind in the NFL.

That leaves baseball and hockey as the lone major professional sports that are still waiting to break that threshold, since Becky Hammon served as an assistant for the San Antonio Spurs this past season. Baseball does have at least one female head trainer.
