What happened to San Diego after 1982?

Reminds me of the Steelers with Cliff Stoudt that season. He was another terrible QB that went to the USFL the next year.

At least Stoudt was good enough to light up the USFL....Luther couldn't even do that.

I thought that DC Tom Bass ran some 4-3 in there as well, but I could be wrong.

In 1982 he did. I think he wanted to go 3-4 in 1982 but it didn't take for a couple of reasons,

In 1983 he got to install what he wanted and as Bryan it was not good. In addition to putting BR Smith as a DE in nickel
he'd also use Lindon King on the left side as a DE. I saw him use a Bear front ... with his Dl covering the G-C-G

A bunch of his guys were rookies, guys were miscast or old in a bend but don't break system and really didn't work well.

Even after Bass they never got their D together for years ...
