Biggest "Name" player not in the HOF

Post by Bryan »

I remember the strange 'argument' for a player being "can you tell the history of the NFL without Player X?" It was brought up for Ken Stabler and others like him, and I think the gist of it is "do you remember Ken Stabler" as opposed to "do you think Ken Stabler had a HOF career?"

So, two guys I remember from my childhood days as being ubiquitous are Harvey Martin and Mark Gastineau. Now that the HOF is watered down, I'm surprised that neither of those DEs get any campaign votes for the Hall. What other name players come to mind for you?

Chuck Foreman was a big name in the 1970s ... always on TV, always in playoffs, often in POY conversation. Maybe outside OJ and Franco
the biggest RB name

Obviously Archie Manning. No one else comes close as the guy casual fans are always shocked isn't in the HOF.

I was disappointed that John Jefferson took a nose dive after leaving the Chargers. Anyone who watched him with Air Coryell thought he was Canton bound. When Billy Sims had that terrible knee injury, the air went out of the team and cities of Detroit and Pontiac.

Probably the biggest surprise is that Jacoby hasnt made the HOF. The Redskins could be up and down but just four players from that 1981-1991 team have been elected despite three championships and four SB games.

Rocky Bleier. Everybody knew Rocky Bleier - and not just because he played for the Steelers.

Lyle Alzado as well. Known for roid' rage but a great career. Many people felt Reggie Bush would be in the HOF ...

Joe Theismann and Jim Plunkett should make the list, although I don’t think they are HOF worthy, they were popular as players and should have a case for the HOVG.
