Not that Norv was that great a HC, but definitely had more success than Wanny in that field.

But if we're simply talking coordinator...who was better for their side of the ball IYOs?

Norv was better

He made a starless Washington 99 offense look star-studded (2nd in scoring behind the GSOT Rams) and even made Mike Nolan’s 49ers seem respectable offensively in 2006

Wanny set the tone for the Cowboy's defenses however, which were tough even during 89-90. Speed kills and at the time people were sceptical about smaller linebackers running around but Jimmy wanted to protect leads and quickness was emphasized.

Wanny was a player's coach and could be a sounding board for coaches and player's who were frustrated with Jimmy's moods or wrath.

Wannstedt's most success as an NFL HC were the back-to-back 11-5 seasons upon taking over for Jimmy Johnson in 2000 & 20001. You can say that it was he inheriting an already good Dolphin team, but Jimmy himself never won 11 games with the Dolphins but Wanny did it back-to-back. That, and a downgrade at QB with Marino now gone as well. With two more winning seasons after that, Dave's only bad moment as Dolphins' HC was the 1-8 start in '04; he then resigning. As a HC, he never had the QBs that Norv had.

The way he got things started in Chicago, taking over a Ditka team that hit rock-bottom, you'd think the Bears under Wanny wouldn't have faltered so quickly by the late-'90s.

EDIT - so much for asking that we talk "strictly coordinator". As for that...I'm quite torn. I'd guess that both are equally to credit for Dallas's success.

The defense hit its stride in Miami under Wanny, but without Wanny throughout Johnson's stops in Oklahoma St and Miami, neither have success in the NFL. For me, he was for Johnson like Arnsparger was for Shula ...

Norv did a great job with Aikman and Beurlein as well. He would actually get upset with Emmitt Smith for not following his blocking better, but Smith was more instinctive than he realized.
