Only one pre-1990s team over 50 percent. Not surprised to see both recent Packers teams being pass heavy.

Things I found interesting:

*all the QBs on the lowest % teams are in the HOF
*The 81 Niners didn't really pass the ball that much more than the 79 Steelers or 80 Raiders
*The 70 Colts were the highest % of the old school teams. Not sure if that was by design or if the run game was just so anemic. Bulaich did fairly well in the postseason running the ball. A very weird team in that Earl Morrall was like a relief pitcher as a QB. The Colts receiving corps was just OK IMO....Mackey was at the end of his effectiveness, Roy Jefferson was tough, Eddie Hinton was just a guy, Tom Mitchell was very underrated but not a great pass catcher.

This is awesome - thank you for posting it. And great observations, Bryan. And all of the 6 lowest teams have at least one WR in the HOF - and half of those teams have 2 WRs in. In the Raiders case, two WRs and a TE!

Surprised that The Greatest Show on Turf isn't higher. Even more surprised by the Saints. The difference between the 78 and 79 Steelers is also interesting.

1970 was in general a confusing season for teams, as the game was transitioning to a more run oriented game, but most teams didn't really know what to do with it. The average number of rushing attempts per team went up, but the total yards went down. QBs were struggling with the zone defenses, but were uncertain on ways to effectively run the ball.

The Colts didn't have Matte for 1970, so a dip is understandable. The Cowboys came close, even with Morton playing at a Trent Dilfer level, but Landry didn't understand how to build a shutdown defense. 49ers had Brodie on a hot year but Willard there was getting a ton of carries at only a 3.3 clip. Just not a lot that makes sense in 1970, there was no complete team.

The 1970 Cowboys' defense shut down the Lions, 49ers and Colts in the postseason, giving up three total TDs, one a simple fluke. Landry refused to replace an injured QB, which cost his team the championship.

The 2002 Bucs being that high up the list shocked me a bit too. I know Brad Johnson had a great season, but always chalked it up to "great efficiency, low volume".....seems it was great efficiency and high volume.

I think some of the "even Dilfer won a SB with a great defense" stuff rubbed off on Brad Johnson in people's memories.

That reputation probably rubbed off on Johnson because his career is underwhelming compared to most Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, but he did throw the ball more than you might expect.
