With a record of 2-4, it looked like the usual bad year for the Steelers. But things changed for the better in one best years the Steelers ever had.

Game 7 Defeated the Washington Redskins at Pitt Stadium 24 to 16

Bobby Layne completed 13 of 25 for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Tom Tracy gained 71 yards. Jimmy Orr caught five passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. Though without any return yardage, DB Dick Alban was the star of the game with three pass interceptions. LB Dick Campbell intercepted a pass and returned it 58 yards. The Steelers had 398 yards of offense.

Game 8 Defeated the Philadelphia Eagles at Franklin Field 31 to 24

Bobby Layne completed 11 passes in 25 attempts for 290 yards and four touchdowns. Tom Tracy caught five passes for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Ray Mathews caught three passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. Steelers hit an even 4-4.

Game 9 Defeated the New York Giants at Pitt Stadium 31 to 10

The biggest win of the season over the team that would be in the title game. Tom Tracy carried 18 times for 71 yards. He also caught three passes for 37 yards and a touchdown. Ray Mathews caught four passes for 98 yards. DB Gary Glick returned a fumble 37 yards for a touchdown.
