I guess the Chiefs eventually gave up their obsession with having a franchise QB, because they went with strictly rentals for the 30 years before Mahomes. Which I find bizarre.

They must have by 1988, because they came back down by 10 and 14 points in the fourth quarter in their two games against the Jets. If they would have lost both games, they would have been able to get Troy Aikman.

October 17, 1976: Chiefs 20 @ Dolphins 17. Jan Stenerud's 34 yard field goal in overtime wins it for K.C. Bob Griese throws for over 300 yards in a losing effort. This was Kansas City's first win over Miami in 7 years. NFL Films selects it as their syndicated NFL Game of the Week.
