Now that I think about it, near the end of the ESPN Monday Night Pregame show last night, Suzy Kolber mentioned that Moss was on of the NFL 100 team, so apparently the names had already been leaked, or maybe they were announced during the ESPN pregame show. I just caught the last 20 minutes or so.

One guy has been announced during each MNF game. The Moss announcement was purposeful. The remaining nine names were not meant to yet be released.

Indeed, they’ve been doing this every week. Tony Gonzalez was named as one of the TE selections a few days before the others were officially announced on the NFL Network show.

While I appreciate them going back and picking guys who played before 1970, some selections truly baffle me, including Hirsch. Terrell Owens and Antonio Brown would have been better choices. If AB had kept his head on straight, and continued being dominant until his early 30's, I think he would have been in that tier behind Rice and Hutson.

Hirsch was the first team flanker on the 50th Anniversary Team, but for the 75th Anniversary Team, they just took 4 receivers: Alworth, Berry, Hutson, and Rice. Hirsch was also #87 on the NFL Films top 100 from about 10-15 years ago (Without looking it up, I think some of the same selectors were consultants). I thought his selection was predictable - I predicted him. I could see them leaving him off for a modern player, but I just didn't think he would get beat out by one of his contemporaries or earlier players.

Charley Taylor over Marvin Harrison.

Why though? Had one monster season, maybe best season a WR has ever had (a quintuple crown) and a ring. But outside that what? Other receivers put up more consistent good numbers... I could be wrong but Hirsch's credentials seem light for the HOF much less being a top 10 guy.

I don't have a good case for him either, I just never really questioned the "wisdom of crowds" view, although I agree on his PFR page, its mostly the one season that jumps out. I believe similar has been said about Warfield and the defense for him was pretty strong. Is there anyone who will defend Hirsch? Decade honors are good: http://nflfootballjournal.blogspot.com/ ... -team.html

I think he is one of the best, if not best of the 1950s---just not sure he's top 10 ever...I think it's based on the "he was the first true flanker" myth..and his monster 1951 season.
