WLAF/NFLE game books

Post by Dusty Sloan »

Good day, everyone!

Does anyone have WLAF/NFLE game books that weren't on NFLGSIS? Basically, 1991-92 and 1995-99-ish? Would love to correct a lot of things the league got wrong/missed, including a lot of missing alumni.

More specifically in the short term, I would like to spend the next couple summer months working on research on the 1995 WLAF season. I have a lot of information, but still am looking for game videos and all post-game stat books.

Here is why I am so interested in it - a) it was cool, b) it meant the start of 13 seasons of spring football until the end in 2007, c) I want to correct the mistakes the league made as much as possible.

Two examples - 1) Week 6, Rhein and Scotland, overtime, I believe the next-to-last play of the game wasn't even statted, since Rhein's Andreas Motzkus was never given a fumble recovery, and I see it in the video I have. 2) Barcelona had a cornerback named John Brown, who isn't in the season defensive stats and isn't listed among WLAF/NFLE alumni, even though I see him in Dragon games, and I see him in postgame stats I do have in other publications.

If anyone can help me in getting what I am looking for above, please let me know! Thanks!

You might try to contact the Hall of Fame Library to see what they have in their archives. This would probably be your best bet.

You might want to check if there are any online fan groups for those teams or the league, they might be able to get you in touch with some of the players who can tell you the whereabouts of the legacy (team records) of the WLAF/NFLE teams, but I think the NFL or HOF probably has all that stuff.

My guess is if the NFL had those game books, they would have posted them to NFLGSIS.com.

I remember that a few years back they were on the web from the two final seasons of the league, because when I tried to find data for some NFL referees and other officials, it always popped out those games. Now I also realize that I should have printed them, because many active NFL officials (and some recent retired ones) started their career in NFL Europe.

I was able to go through those gamebooks, and I have the crews from 2003-07 at least. Would love to go further back, though. A lot of future white hats got some grass time in the position in Europe, starting with Ed Hochuli in 1991.

Actually, most of the gamebooks are still available with the following URL:

http://nflgsis.com/YYYY/Reg/WW/GGGGG/Gamebook.pdf

YYYY is the year from 2002 to 2007
WW is the week, which is 01 to 10
GGGGG is the game serial number, which starts with 63 in Week 1, 2002. Every week has 3 games, so Week 2 starts with 66. The sequence ends in 2003 with 124. In 2004, the game numbers are 5 digits, 18037→18160

The World Bowl is the one postseason game, which has Post/01/ in the URL, and the next game serial number.

Not all gamebooks are available, but here are the links for the 2002 season:

What gaps, if any, remain in the WLAF/NFLE game books now? Or will this take care of everything?

Rupert, I would have to do some inventorying, but pretty much, missing almost all from 1991-92, 1995-2001. I'm not sure if I could go back via archive.org and get any in that timeframe off nfleurope.com, but even if so, that would still miss any of the early years.

But I do have a contact that may close a lot of this up, just needs time to go through what he has. Unless the Hall of Fame archives have received this in the last several years since I last tried, they don't have them.

But this is exciting and frustrating at the same time - I received the 1995 WLAF Week 1 books, and they were fascinating - and via video, I noticed there were a couple players who played who weren't in the book as having played. But that will happen - just glad to be seeing the books I never thought I would!

I'd like to quote this for every time someone yells at John and Me about the sack stats.
