Pre-Season/Exhibition Seasons

Post by vikingsfan1963 »

Has anyone or organization/group compiled any historical information regarding Pre-season/Exhibition Seasons such as final standings and stats. Or where stats even compiled?

I think that our fearless leader (Mark L. Ford) can probably shed some light on the topic:

Unofficial game statistics (like rushing and passing) can be seen in preseason game accounts from the 1970s onward in some newspapers, but haven't been compiled in the manner that is done for regular season and playoff statistics, and for a lot of good reasons. In preseason, players are rotated in and out during a game as they're being evaluated. Generally, the regulars make token appearances, with the exception of the third game of the four game preseason. And since these are exhibitions and very few players are out there for the entire game, the stats aren't a true barometer of anything.

As for standings, there are compilations of win-loss records that I can send you (I was asked to compile them for two books, and then they were edited out before publication); but not total points for and points against. Tod Maher's profootballarchives.com has the scores of the preseason games and non-league games as well as the regular ones, and you can see the results of any team's individual preseason.

The Broncos website has game books available for all their exhibition games, along with regular season and post season from 1960 onward in downloadable pdf form:

Looks like there are no exhibition game books for 1960 or 61.

Currently, my website is not online. I may start it up again in the near future. If do it will not be updated as often as it was in the past. It was a lot of work maintaining the site.

I've always been impressed with your work (not just on profootballarchives.com, but in your books as well), and I appreciate that you maintained the site for so many years.
