If it didn't rain in Tampa on 12/16/79...

Post by JWL »

If it did not rain in Tampa on December 16, 1979 do you think the Chiefs would have beaten the Buccaneers and then maybe the Redskins would have won Super Bowl 14 and then maybe Jack Pardee would have stayed in Washington longer and maybe won the Super Bowls Joe Gibbs won and then maybe be considered one of the greatest head coaches ever and then maybe Joe Gibbs would have coached the Lions or some other team?

Tampa Bay would have beaten the Chiefs even with no rain; they had the home crowd and they had to win this game. In the Dallas Washington game, which I consider the greatest regular season game in pro football history, all things considered, Washington was up 17-0 early in the second period and after Dallas came back to take a 21-20 lead, the Redskins roared back to retake the lead at 34-21. Dallas, however, came back a second time to win the game. Staubach was not going to be denied that day, but to an extent, Pardee and the Redskins have nobody to blame but themselves for losing that game as they blew a sizable lead on two occasions. Even if Tampa had lost the Week 16 game and Washington lost to Dallas, the Redskins would have had to beat Philadelphia on the road, and then would have had to beat LA or Chicago on the road. I don't think the Redskins would have gotten past Philly in the Wild Card, not to mention Chicago in the Divisional. The 1979 NFC race was one of the weirdest races in pro football history, but I believe in order to get to the Super Bowl, the Redskins needed to have home field advantage.

I think that KC would have had a decent chance of winning. Terry Bradshaw was impressed with them, saying that they were a team of the future.

If they did, Washington would have went to Philly, and they would have had a good chance. Remember, the Eagles needed help from the officials just to get by Chicago.

If the Redskins had not screwed up in week 1 against Houston, or against New Orleans -AT HOME- or losing to the pitiful Giants, they would've at worst had a Wild Card to fall back on regardless of what happened in Dallas.

KC's offense was hit and miss for most of the season. Four of the five games in which they scored 20 points or more came in the four division games against the Raiders and Seahawks. The week before the Tampa Bay game, they managed only 10 points against a Baltimore team that had allowed 108 in its three previous games.
