Other sources say he died this morning (Friday). Of course, no one says WHERE he died - which tells how bad the state of journalism is today.

I think Morrall has to be considered the greatest backup QB in pro football history. Between the 1968 and 1972 seasons where he took over for future HOFers who went down to injuries, and led their teams most of the season all the way to the Super Bowl, to coming in off the bench to lead the Colts to a win in Super Bowl V. I can't think of another who filled in under tough circumstances and came thru so well. I don''t think there is another who comes close, maybe Steve Young in San Francisco, and Don Strock was another great backup. This should really be it's own thread.

Former basketball executive Harry Weltman died this morning at the age of 81. While he's remembered for his work in the NBA and ABA (the latter of which included giving Bob Costas his first job in broadcasting), he served as marketing director for NFL Films in the 1960's, helping build the popularity of shows like "This Week in the NFL."

Not to mention the only coach to win four Super Bowls. I am currently watching the 1989 Steelers Oilers wild card game, and was thinking the 1989 team must have been Noll's finest coaching job. It is a huge loss for the Steeler Nation.

I agree that his coaching performance in 1989 was really good. I would think 1972, 1974 and 1989 might have been his three best years of coaching. It is really tough to determine, though, because a lot of factors need to be considered.

Noll took a team who was outscored 92-10 in the first two weeks and his boys did not give up, winning five of their last six to snag the fifth seed. In the wild card game, they defeated an Oilers team they did not stack up well against on paper, and nearly upset the Broncos in the Divisional round. The 1972 and 1974 team had a lot of young stars, but Bubby Brister and Merril Hoge beat a HOF QB in the playoffs and nearly beat another, both on the road.
