Packers #1!

Post by racepug »

So the Green Bay Packers have overtaken the Chicago Bears as the all-time winningest NFL franchise, have they? Well, that's nice. It's too bad, though, that in these last 30 years of catching up to "Da Bears" that they claimed the Lombardi Trophy only twice.

I remember in the '80s the Raiders being proclaimed as the "most-winningest" franchise ever. Now was it their AFL games being counted in there; or was is strictly since-'70? I would imagine the latter given the losing they suffered during the first half of the '60s and "winningest" going by %age.

In either event, is there a stat source out there that lists each "most-winningest" team ever and what week of what season that the new team took over? And when did the Raiders stop having that title?

Thanks in-advance!

PS - it's about time, just the same! They ARE only winners of THIRTEEN World Championships!! Makes sense!

I have a running list of all time WLT% at the conclusion of every season. It doesn't pinpoint what week in the season a new team took over the crown, but this will tell you who the leader was at the end of the season. All ties are counted half win/half loss regardless of what season they occurred in. FWIW, AAFC WLT are not included here, but AFL is.

1920 Akron Pros
1921 Chicago Staleys
1922 Chicago Bears
1923 Canton Bulldogs
1924 Frankford Yellowjackets
1925-26 Pottsville Maroons
1927-28 Chicago Bears
1929-30 N.Y. Giants
1931-32 Packers
1933-49 Bears
1950-59 Browns
1960-62 Oilers
1963-76 Browns
1977-95 Raiders
1996-97 Cowboys
1998 Dolphins
1999 Jaguars
2000-06 Dolphins
2007 Cowboys
2008 Dolphins
2009-12 Cowboys
2013 Bears
2014 Cowboys
2015 Packers
2016-19 Cowboys
2020-21 Packers

The Cowboys look poised to retake the title after this season. The Ravens also have a shot at being on top for the first time in their history.

Outstanding mega-knowledge-drop, Chris!

Very interesting read/journey from the Pros all the way to the present! A little surprised that the Bulldogs "only" were #1 for that one 1923 year. Halas's Bears, sensibly, were the first to hold this title for more than just a couple of years - 16 more like it! Browns fittingly take over the exact entire '50s! Retake it in '63 and hold on into Forrest Gregg's time there.

And then, of course, the Raiders. Starting 8-2 in '95 had to help keep it there a bit longer. My guess is that it fizzled sometime during the collapse that immediately came. Imagine if it was the very next game - vs Dallas - that dropped them at 8-3??

Makes sense that the Jags quickly peeked in there during '99.

Interesting how Dallas and Miami go back-and-forth for quite a while! Shula simply accumulating all those winning seasons, and Jimmy adding to it along with the franchise winning just enough after his departure (especially with help of those back-to-back Wanstedt 11-5s) kept them right in that back-and-forth mix.

Surprised at Chicago popping up during Trestman's 8-8 campaign in '13. They didn't seem to win that much this century.

Yes, looks like Big D should grab it back. Especially Packers' sudden woes.

Steelers? Those initial 40 years ought to forever anchor them well away from this conversation.
