An alternate All-30s Team

Post by TanksAndSpartans »

I think the '30s HOF team holds up really well except that 25 players is a lot (I'll come back to that). I overlapped on 16 players, but actually 18 if you count the two '20s carryovers (Hubbard and Michaleske). I bolded the 18 overlaps.

HOF:

E: Hewitt, Hutson, Millner, Tinsley
T: Christensen, Cope, Edwards, Lee, Stydahar
G: Emerson, Fortmann, Goldenberg, Letlow
C: Hein, Svendsen
B: Clark, Herber, Isbell, Battles, Blood, Feathers, Leemans, Strong, Hinkle, Nagurski

My team is just 19 players:

E: Hewitt, Hutson
T: Hubbard, Edwards
G: Michalske, Fortmann
C: Hein
B: Clark, Battles, Blood, Nagurski

Honorable Mention: Christensen, Stydahar, Emerson, Herber, Strong, Leemans, Hinkle, Ace Gutowsky

***

Giving a second look to the HOF All-'30s players I left off:

Millner: Statistically, he never had a 300 yard receiving season. In 7 seasons, he got postseason honors twice, both 2nd team. Not a well known name, but I prefer Bill Smith who played for the Cardinals.

Tinsley: Statistically, in '37 and '38, he put up Hutson like numbers. He was a talent, and I get its a balancing act, but to me 2 seasons isn’t enough. I prefer Ray Flaherty and Red Badgro.

Cope: He played 2 seasons in the ’30s and didn’t have postseason honors in either. I prefer George Musso.

Lee: 2 seasons with post-season honors, both 2nd team. I prefer Joe Kopcha.

Goldenberg: 1 season with post-season honors in the ‘30s. I prefer Father Lumpkin.

Letlow: 3 seasons with postseason honors in the ‘30s. I prefer Link Lyman.

Svendsen: Short career, no postseason honors in the ‘30s. I prefer Nate Barragar and Clare Randolph.

Isbell: 2 seasons in the ‘30s with postseason honors, but there's a 9th back I like better. Ace Gutowsky temporarily held the all-time rushing record. He played linebacker on defense. His post-season honors are good and despite just one title, he was a key member of one of the better teams of the decade.

Feathers: It’s sad he got hurt, we'll never know what he could have done, but I don't think you can call a player all-decade on speculation. I prefer Glenn Presnell and Ernie Caddel.

25 is too many, imo. Even for some of the players I like, Barragar for example, I still don't think you necessarily have to have them on the all-decade team just to have a second center, or fill in whatever positional gap (having to choose second team ends would be particularly tough). Because, on one hand, you could say what's the difference, a few extra is fine, but I think how it turned out is that when people look at the HOF All-'30s team, a HOF worthy player like Emerson gets lost in a big crowd of non-HOFers, most have whom I don't think should have been selected in the first place.

For HOF, I like: Emerson

For HOVG:

I like: Christensen and Ace Gutowsky

I'd likely vote for (if someone else nominated): Smith, Kopcha, Lumpkin, Barragar, Randolph, Caddel

Let me know what you think.

Great call TanksAndSpartans ...

Some were simply unworthy, while others will never get another chance ... unless the voters go back to two seniors per year ...

Thanks Brian. It was fun to work on and interesting to see how the HOF teams from the '20s and '30s are similar/different.

Do one for the 40s as well ...

When I researched the All-decades teams over 40 players did not play long enough to be worthy of their All-decade designation. The guys at Pro Football Journal led by John Turney noticed this and created the Mid Decade teams, which the HOF ought to recognize and officially reevaluate and reincorporate, while adding without subtracting players. Just a better, more comprehensive redesignation.

I reformulated to recognize a few additional players after discussion with @Zero26:

First Team:

E: Hewitt, Hutson
T: Hubbard, Edwards
G: Michalske, Fortmann
C: Hein
B: Clark, Battles, Blood, Nagurski

Second Team:

E: Joe Carter, Bill Smith
T: Christensen, Stydahar
G: Emerson, Joe Kopcha
C: Frank Baush
B: Herber, Strong, Leemans, Hinkle

Honorable Mention:

Ace Gutowsky

I bolded the players not on the HOF team this time. Puts me at 23, a little higher than I said originally, but still 3 less than the HOF team. Maybe I'll stop, I think its pretty close.

Great job, as usual T&S ...

I had forgotten about this thread when I asked you about deserving players ...

Thanks Brian. I think the '30s could use a few more players. None of Christensen, Ace Gutowsky, Joe Carter, Bill Smith, Joe Kopcha or Frank Baush are in the HOVG. At least Christensen is perennially on the ballot. I voted this past weekend and I have to admit there were 5 or 6 finalists I didn't like. I had trouble choosing my last 4.

Your revised team is far, far better than the one chosen by the Hall of Fame. It's hard to imagine how they came up with the likes of Svendsen, Goldenberg, Lee, Letlow and Cope.

Thanks Bob. I agree on that group. I would guess one person with Packers ties may have had a lot of influence. If so, that would take homerism to a new level. Like @Zero26 pointed out, there's at least one Packer at every position. If it was me I would have been happy none of the legit players on my team got snubbed, not trying to sneak in a bunch of reaches :D
