The Scnellbacher choice is so intriguing. Though TJ Troup brought up his abilities as a ballhawking safety for the Yanks and Giants, he wasnt even evaluated for the the best ever safeties article done by John Turney at Pro Jootball Journal due to a short career.

I personally dont believe players should be voted into a HOVG/HOF with only 3-5 year careers unless it was the beginning of organized pro football from say, 1915-1935 but at the same time, isnt that what the Hall Of Very Good is all about ?
Allowing for players that wont make the HOF due to injuries, short careers, early retirement, military service, etc ?

Of course, if every player were evaluated on a short career or 4-5 great seasons, there would over 500 players in these voting discussions, which arent fair to players with longer careers. The way Troup described Schnellbachers abilities, was he a trailblazer or influenced defensive strategy at the free safety position ? He had to have had an impact on fellow Hall Of Fame players/coaches Emlen Tennell and Tom Landry ... If he possibly could have been an innovator in defensive strategy and tactics, as well as his 35 interceptions counting postseason, Schnellbacker being elected to the HOVG, would be one of the few exceptions to the rule for me but it will be up to other voters ...

Sorry, Emlen Tunnell, Schnellbacher, spelling mistakes.

Good point - short career relative to his contemporaries, but that can be compensated for, but requires more subjective analysis.

The times are different. The game was much more physical from the inception of pro football, beyond the war years. Don't forget that until 1950, there were no mass substitutions. Players played all three phases, the entire game. Take that into account and 5 year career could be compared to 10 or 15 years.

Good points but it doesnt appear Schnellbacher did much as a receiver, which is hard to believe with his height and wingspan. You would think Conerly would have wanted him more on offense, though the Giant defense is more fan popular ...

Speaking of Giants, I am surprised nobody nominated John Cannady at LB ...

Was he the first true, MLB ?
In an article for the talkoffamenetwork, Coach TJ Troup thought he was worthy of the HOF ...

The process isn't exactly transparent:
  • You submit five names, and maybe you include some justifications for your selection, or maybe you don't, but you don't know whether those justifications make it to the committee or whether they consider them. You don't know whether non-NFL experience counts, or which non-NFL experience counts.

You submit your five names to the committee, and you know the five names that you submitted, but you don't know the entire list of names that were submitted.

You don't know how the committee decided which names should appear on the ballot.

You vote on who should make it into the HOVG and then get the results without knowing how many votes each name received.
I was re-reading this topic and, without being argumentative or singling out Ryan I just wanted to say that I think the senior members of the HoVG Committee did a great job in addressing these concerns this year.... all the italicized topics were addressed.
Thank you to them for making the process more transparent and thank you to the PFRA membership for prodding "us" in the right direction.
