Re: Talk of Fame poll -- Super-Seniors listed

So I don't think he was ever left off any all-pro teams unfairly, at least not due to his race. Whether his race played a factor in being relegated to second-team all-pro rather than the first team, as well as his omission from the 1920s All-Decade Team, is much more compelling. I do touch on that ...

Re: Talk of Fame poll -- Super-Seniors listed

I actually just started reading Duke Slater's bio having recently finished Fritz Pollard's. I wonder if there is anything in the bio about Slater not getting post season recognition that he deserved - I know there has been a lot written about that happening with college all american teams. I'd love...

Re: Talk of Fame poll -- Super-Seniors listed

Looks like someone with a voting bot got to this poll as well. All of a sudden, tons of votes went for Duke Slater. Didn’t know there were any Rock Island Independents or Chicago Cardinals devotees out there — learn something new every day, looks like. :) Not sure why you'd assume it's a voting bot...

Re: Did anyone else get an email from pfra.review@yahoo.com?

I suppose I should personally apologize for cluttering up this organization with all my talk about women’s football. I didn’t realize that one Coffin Corner article and one lone thread on the topic 18 months ago were so memorable a year and a half later. I’ve been a PFRA member off and on sinc...

Re: one of the Forgotten 4 is nowhere near forgotten

Again, there is no doubt that Washington overcame tremendous racism during his short NFL playing career...no question about that. But it's no different than the racism that Slater, Lillard, Strode, Kemp, Willis, Motley, Pollard, etc. etc. etc. all faced. He's not the only guy who overcame hardships ...

Re: 1926 Frankfurt Yellow Jackets - Women's exhibition

It was indeed a halftime "exhibition", although it was mostly a comedy routine rather than an actual exhibition. The team of Lady Yellow Jackets scrimmaged at halftime against two old men; one of those men was Uncle Joe Beeson, pictured in Moran's photograph. That one I'd never seen...pret...

Seriously, though, Cod's idea is quite a good one, and I think the women's leagues would be very receptive to it.

Re: "The Forgotten Four".....

Neal, I loved reading all you've written on this on your site. Great work. The black players in the early days of the NFL weren't in the large markets until we started seeing small market teams fold and the Cardinals picked up Slater (I got this from your site - great work!) Exactly, it wasn't on t...

Neal, I loved reading all you've written on this on your site. Great work. To play devil's advocate - this reminds me a little of the "who discovered America" argument. The black players in the early days of the NFL weren't in the large markets until we started seeing small market teams f...

Re: "The Forgotten Four".....

Fair enough. Given all the success Slater had as a linemen (six All-Pro selections) in an obvious terrible era for African Americans, and how he thrived off the field after his playing days, I should think he deserved to be mentioned. He was a better pro player than Robeson. You're 100 percent dead...
