Re: Okay, what are your theories for difference?

by BernardB » Sat Jan 23, 2016 11:37 pm "Guess we put this thread rest, giving spite for spite." There was no spite on Reaser's part. As you were going down to defeat, you grasped at straws and tried to invoke names you likely envy. As children, there was Hans Brinker; or, the Silver Skat...

Re: Okay, what are your theories for difference?

I want to celebrate what the likes of Bob Carroll, Pete Palmer, and John Thorn accomplished, but you are all twisted up ranting about what some bad stat types did. You are what could be called a lumper, you want to lump the good and the bad all together. "The Hidden Game of Football" is l...

Re: Okay, what are your theories for difference?

I understand your frustration with stats. I doubt it, but a large part is with how people use stats: without context, out of context, and putting stock in stats that very basic football knowledge says have no stock. It's also not frustration, it's more wanting the collective football knowledge to i...

Re: Okay, what are your theories for difference?

Went back and read the Blanda and sacks thread and, from my perspective, Matt has taken up residence at an extremist position on stats. Yet, in the sacks thread, I didn't see anyone take a valid position against what I was saying (some eventually and reluctantly agreed) and more importantly I didn'...

Re: Okay, what are your theories for difference?

I appreciate that straw burns brightest when it's placed at the extremities, but there is a middle ground. Nobody suggested Belichick was a statistical luddite. Here's the relevant passage from the story: Moss came under fire when he finished Sunday's game with just one catch and appeared to be a b...

Re: Okay, what are your theories for difference?

"Stats don't matter" and "Stats are for losers." Ok, got it. I need to stay away from these horrible things that sow confusion in weak minds (media types who ask all those dumb questions). But wait, the above absolutist statement is later qualified (can an absolutist statement b...

Re: Okay, what are your theories for difference?

Bringing this thread back to Brady and stats, since that's what it's about. Something I've always respected about Brady is his knowing stats don't matter, and his lack of care for stats. I remember a press conference when he was asked about passer rating and said it didn't matter and he didn't care...

Re: Go For It?!

Divisional Round, 1/16/15: Down by one with no time left on the clock the Packers chose to kick the XP and play for a tie rather than go for two points and the win. As it turned out the Packers played for the tie and lost in overtime without ever touching the ball. Should they instead have tried fo...

Re: Peyton's Last Go Round

1970 Colts were better than the 1969 Colts. Better defense. 1969 Colts wound up benching Gaubatz, Shinnick, and Lyles midseason. Seven of the eight 1969 playoff teams were worse in 1970. Cowboys were about the same. Adderley helped the defense, but passing game was worse after Rentzel went out. Dol...
