Re: Jerry Glanville-Brett Favre

Just a classic case of a head coach disagreeing with management's draft strategy. Glanville either wasn't that impressed with Favre as a prospect, or felt a second round pick could have been used in another area. The head coach is often focused on the short term, while the front office tends to hav...

Re: Jerry Glanville-Brett Favre

I was watching a couple NFL Network shows (one on Favre, the other on the early 90's Falcons), and I was amazed at the contempt Jerry Glanville had for Brett Favre when both were with the Falcons. Glanville had Chris Miller at QB, who was average at best and the main reason why the Falcons drafted ...

Re: Has anybody been able to rewatch Super Bowl XII

John Facenda's opening sentence in his narration of the Super Bowl XII highlight film best sums up this game:"Right from the start Super Bowl XII was a coach's nightmare!!" This was also the first Super Bowl played indoors and Steve Sabol Jr. related in one feature that the artificial lig...

Re: Has anybody been able to rewatch Super Bowl XII

Has anybody ever been able to sit through an entire rewatch of this game? This is definitely one of the worst (if not the worst) Super Bowls ever played thus far. I'm not old enough to have been able to watch it live but I have had the dvd of the game for about nine years now and given that I am a ...

Any word on the cause of death? Dawson was a kicker, but it mentions a concussion foundation in the obituary.

Re: 1982 NFL season - expectations as well as retrospect

As much as I consider the ’78-thru-’81 seasons as the ‘Mt Rushmore’ of the 16-game era, I feel that had the very following season been a full one, it just may have ended up being tops with me. I biasedly feel this way partly due to AFC Central matching up with NFC East that very year; and Steelers ...

Re: Herschel and the Vikings- what exactly went wrong?

I always had the feeling Walker lost confidence, or started running more tentatively after leaving the Cowboys. A north/south runner can still be successful in the NFL, and Walker had a rare strength and speed ratio. Whatever the problem was, Walker's production as a RB was disappointing after leavi...

Re: Herschel and the Vikings- what exactly went wrong?

My favorite book "Pro Football Chronicle" summed it up nicely in 1989. "Walker is a great athlete, not a great football player. A quarterback could hand him a piano instead of the ball and he would still gain 4.2 yards. Walker has everything you would look for in a great back..except...

Re: Terrell Owens skipping HOF induction

As far as I know this is unprecedented. Well, the article states "The decision to decline the invitation and not attend his own induction ceremony is unprecedented." So, I am guessing you are correct in that. I find it doubtful that the quotes attributed to Owens were in fact made by him....

Re: Herschel and the Vikings- what exactly went wrong?

We all know the gist- Vikings traded way too much for Herschel, didn't work out, Cowboys became a dynasty. But more specifically- WHY did it go wrong? The Vikings had more success in 1987-1988 with relatively less-than-awesome running games. Was it NFC depth/strength? Quarterbacking woes? Misused? ...
