1895 Shepardsville, MI Football Club

Can someone assist me with a question asked by a friend: There is a plaque in Clinton County, MI stating that the first professional team may have played on July 4, 1895. They were called the Michigan Rushers. My understanding is that members of the team split gate receipts but did not have signed c...

Mike Alstott - HOVG

Alstott was an offensive focal point of the Buccaneers from 1996-2001, a rarity for a fullback. Not a particularly effective blocker, but made up for it with production. Six-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All Pro (1x second team). Did not have great speed, but for 250 pounds, he could out...

Re: Uniform Peculiarities thread

I remember the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers placed the player's number on the hips of the pants for some reason in the 1980s. I think the Cowboys did it first and the Packers copied a year or two later. They both got rid of the smaller numeral by the 1990s.

Re: Placekickers

I have no idea why they did it, but like pop culture historian Chuck Klosterman...I just found it cool. I do remember trying to emulate Rich Karlis and Mike Lansford when in middle school and high school. I do find the theory that kickers today favor soccer shoes which have less padding than footbal...

The Life and Teams of Johnny F. Bassett

Shameless plug for my latest book. It is available now from McFarland: https://mcfarlandbooks.com/product/the-life-and-teams-of-johnny-f-bassett/ One of the most influential sportsmen of the late 20th century, Johnny F. Bassett’s marketing wizardry belied his impact on professional hockey and footba...

Re: Obscure things remembered about somewhat obscure players

Lars Tate of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was hit at the line of scrimmage, did a full somersault, managed to land on his feet, and ran for a 47-yard touchdown in a wild 30-24 loss to the Cardinals in 1988. Still one of the darndest runs I have ever seen, pulled off my a solid but unspectacular back. ht...

Re: Biggest almost-comeback

My introduction to this topic came in 1988. The Buccaneers trailed the Colts 35-10 entering the fourth quarter. Vinny Testaverde caught fire in the final stanza: nine of fifteen passing, 226 yards, and three touchdowns. The Bucs got the ball back with just under 2:00 to play and got to the Colts 43 ...

Re: Biggest almost-comeback

1987 Week 2: The Cardinals had the ball on the five yard line and fourth down, but Earl Ferrell wasn't able to hold on to a Neil Lomax pass, and their comeback against the Chargers falls short: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fhUd9IsfdM That's okay...after the strike the Cardinals scored 28 fourth...

Re: 79 Season Opener/Bucs vs Lions

I'm still alive!!! I am in the final semester of graduate school to obtain my MA in History......so, my ability to write for fun has been curtailed somewhat. To answer the questions about broadcasts: As far as Tampa television is concerned, the 1977, 1978, and 1979 home openers did not sell out, so ...
