Re: Chuck Bednarik

I have a friend who belonged to the same country club as Bednarik, and said he was not well-liked by the other members. Said he was an insufferable blowhard who would tell the same stories over and over again using the exact same wording and expressions. He also always expected special treatment, ju...

Re: 1970 Long Island Bulls

Roger Anderson played for a semi-pro team called the Chambersburg Cardinals in 1972 trying to get back into the NFL, but he was overweight and out of shape. Chambersburg is where a number of ex-Pottstown Firebirds landed.

Re: Thoughts on blocking TEs from the 1960's, 1970's & 1980'

Don Warren was a great blocking tight end for the Redskins during the Joe Gibbs glory years. Started on all three Super Bowl winning teams.

Re: 1970 Long Island Bulls

The Hartford Knights played in the Seaboard Football League in 1972, went 14-0 and won the championship. They won the championship game over the Chambersburg Cardinals, which is the team where a bunch of former Pottstown Firebirds landed.

Re: 1970 Long Island Bulls

1970 was the year NFL Films produced a documentary about the ACFL champion Pottstown Firebirds that ran before Super Bowl V. They were also immortalized that season in a book called "The Forgettables." There is a Pottstown Firebirds page on Facebook, and someone has posted an NFL Films doc...

Re: Surprisingly DISAPPOINTING teams

1980 Redskins -- Came out of nowhere to go 10-6 in 1979 and barely missed making the playoffs due to an improbable turn of events (another interesting story). Unfortunately, thanks to the hangover from the devastating 35-34 loss to Dallas that cost them the 1979 NFC East crown and a playoff berth (g...

Re: Sam Huff and the 1967 Giants

Dick Modzelewski was lucky to be traded from the Giants to the Browns after the 1963 season. He picked up a second championship ring with the Browns in 1964, and made it back to the championship game with the Browns in 1965, but lost to the Packers. There's a great picture of him walking off the fie...
