Re: Pontiac Silverdome today

The car companies and suppliers still use the stadium parking lot to do vehicle and technology demonstrations. Plenty of room to set up courses and test tracks with traffic cones and such so potential customers and automotive press can try out new models and features in ride and drives. There are a ...

Re: Former Giants coach Allie Sherman passes away

I seem to recall hearing he could be abrasive and sarcastic, which may be part of the reason why he never got another coaching job.

Re: 1956-1957 Chicago Cardinals

Colts GM Joe Thomas must be part of this discussion too. Yes, he did a good job blowing up an aging roster in the early 70s and quickly rebuilding it into a playoff team, but he became increasingly crazy and paranoid, which is also part of why they fell apart so quickly after several playoff appeara...

Bobby Layne Gambling True or False?

I've heard there are allegations about Bobby Layne gambling, and some speculate he retired after the 1962 season because he would have gotten suspended along with Paul Hornung and Alex Karras. Any truth to it? The topic does not come up in his biography "Heart of a Lion."

Re: Player movement in the 1950's

Lots of blockbuster trades involving large numbers of players too. The ones for Ollie Matson and Les Richter immediately come to mind, but I also seem to recall reading about some more low profile transactions with lots of players involved.

Re: Semi-Pro Players Who Made It to the NFL

It depends on who you ask. He was the leading passer in the WFL in 1975 and was in several NFL training camps, but was basically uncoachable. If you ever get the chance, check out the NFL Films show "Pottstown Revisited," where they go back and interview a bunch of the players 40 years aft...

Re: Semi-Pro Players Who Made It to the NFL

Joe Gilliam played for the Baltimore Eagles after his pro career, and so did former Redskins kick returner Herb Mul-Key.

Re: Semi-Pro Players Who Made It to the NFL

Another player I remember my father coaching who wanted to play himself back into the NFL was former Giants DT Roger Anderson (1965-68), who played on the 1972 Chambersburg (PA) Cardinals in hopes he could get a fifth year in the big time so he'd qualify for a pension. Didn't happen...he was way out...

Re: Semi-Pro Players Who Made It to the NFL

Mark Moseley made a brief comeback with the Fredericksburg (VA) Generals in 1996 when he was in his late 40s, and made a game-saving tackle on a kick-off return that made it on the local news. The Generals won the Mason-Dixon Football League championship that year.
