Re: 1950's Detroit Lions

I would definitely go with the Browns as the team of the 50s. Yeah, the Lions owned them, but Cleveland was better overall throughout the decade. Speaking of the Lions "owning" the Browns; Detroit has an 18-5 lead in all of their head-to-head meetings from 1950 to today. It was 12-2 throu...

Re: 1950's Detroit Lions

As far as team of the 1950's goes, the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions both won 3 NFL championships during that decade. The Browns won more conference championships and more games than the Lions during the 1950's, but in head to head games between the 2 teams, Detroit usually won, with the Br...

Re: 1950's Detroit Lions

The problem I have with the post Otto Graham Browns is that they only won one championship from 1956 to 1973. They certainly were regular contenders, though. The Yankees never stopped winning from 1921 to 1964 so it's just one looonnng dynasty. Well, call it what you might, but the Detroit Lions we...

Re: 1950's Detroit Lions

I only have one very small difference of opinion. I don't believe a six year run of success constitutes a dynasty. The 50s Lions had a similar run to the Triplets era Cowboys. I don't consider them a dynasty either. IMO, a dynasty doesn't have to win the championship every year, but you have to win...

Re: 1950's Detroit Lions

Thank you John. Nice to hear things like that. Detroit had a lot of great and very good players on their dynasty teams (1952-57), so first the Hall of Fame Lions from those teams: 1. Bobby Layne 2. Doak Walker 3.Joe Schmidt 4. Jack Christiansen 5. Yale Lary 6. Lou Creekmur 7. John Henry Johnson 8, F...

Re: 1953 NFL Championship game footage

Graham said once in an interview about this game that he'd contracted a rash on his throwing hand making it difficult to grip the ball. That would definitely explain his un-Otto like performance: 2 of 15 for 20 yards. Automatic Otto was not so Ottomatic that day. The Detroit Lions did get a couple ...

Re: 1953 NFL Championship game footage

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsnW2K01Hcw The Lions pull off a successful "Home Run Throwback" with Doak Walker completing a 20-yard TD pass play to Bobby Layne at the 4:40 mark of the video...only to be nullified by penalty. I assume its because Layne lined up under center and then bec...

Re: 1950's Detroit Lions

Coach TJ: I have been looking over your book on Amazon and reading parts of it. I am pretty sure that I will purchase it. Not sure that I would have started this thread if I knew that there was so much info about the 1950's Lions in it. I probably would have waited until I read your book. Anyway, wh...

Re: 1950's Detroit Lions

.....saban, have you entertained thoughts about purchasing my book? just "plugging" away at promoting for all of you with any interest in the 50's. to finish off '56 .....the lions averaged 362 yards a game on offense for the strong 6-0 start. games four through six the lion defense allow...

Re: 1950's Detroit Lions

...saban, sure have enjoyed what you have written concerning the '56 lions, yet have to take issue with one statement. gilmer did not play well against the bears. film study(many times have watched the film of this game)shows that gilmer just is not a quality back-up coming off the bench. that is w...
