Re: NFL Defenses of 1977

One factor that finally tipped the balance in 1977 is likely that many teams couldn't even run the ball particularly well any more. The rushing average was 4.1 in 1976, in 1977 it was 3.8, despite more carries. Defenses knew year over year they didn't need to respect the pass, teams tried to run, de...

Re: NFL Defenses of 1977

Just like in baseball in the 1960s, 1977 was a culmination of strategic and rule changes. As much as some people here love the 1970s, the 1950s and 1960s were recognizable two platoon football as well, with higher scoring, more successful passing than you had in 1977. If the NFL was trying to get ba...

Re: What does an 18-game schedule look like?

With the NFL inching its way to an 18-game schedule, what do you think it looks like: 6 games with divisional opponents 4 games each with 2 intra-conference divisions (8 games total) 4 games with 1 inter-conference division or something else? The intera-conference would go to 4-2-2 I think, not 4-4...

Re: NFL broadcast preservation status

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but from the 1977 season onward is when we start to see the majority of NFL games have a full broadcast available in some archive? And for playoff games in the rounds before the Super Bowl, would that be more like the mid 70’s? Of the games I’ve only read about...

Re: Neal Anderson

From that era, I think Earnest Byner and James Brooks were probably better as backs with some receiving ability. Anderson does have a lot of TDs, but Byner and Brooks match him there and had longer careers. I think Byner was more of a grind it out guy, and Brooks was more talented than Anderson. Bu...

Re: Wayne Walker

I've thought the same thing. The Lions brought in Garo Yepremian, who had a good rookie season, then fell off his second year and the Lions probably gave up on Yepremian too quickly. At this same time, the Lions also had Lem Barney performing the punting duties, and Barney was about as good as a pu...

Re: 2024 Hall of Very Good Nominations

Rashad was much better with Kramer than Tarkenton but Kramer also forced the ball to him, which resulted in interceptions. Rashad was somewhat similar to Chris Carter without the TDs of course. People wonder what he might have done had he stayed in St Louis for the Coryell era? Though a good career...

Re: Obscure RB trivia

Not Kelly. 1968 was only his third year as a starter. And I did think of Daniels, who I believe had crossed 5,000 yards by 1968, but he wasn't in the NFL, so I assume he doesn't qualify either. Clem Daniels was in the NFL in the 1968 season, playing for the Niners. He also had 5000+ career rushing ...
