Re: NFL Defenses of 1977

Eller looked super light that year. Also some defensive tackles playing a bit skinner, too (Page, Brooks, Sherk maybe Chambers). I never thought about it, but you're right. Compared to the behemoths who would come along, linemen from that era look downright emaciated. In fact, I believe Alan Page a...

Re: Pre-1966 NFL Championship Game MVPs

I think Sport magazine used to select the title game MVP. Seems to me Johnny U won a couple Corvettes in 1958 and '59.

Re: Obscure RB trivia

Not Kelly. 1968 was only his third year as a starter. And I did think of Daniels, who I believe had crossed 5,000 yards by 1968, but he wasn't in the NFL, so I assume he doesn't qualify either. Clem Daniels was in the NFL in the 1968 season, playing for the Niners. He also had 5000+ career rushing ...

Re: Negro League stats

NFL stats are NFL stats. Then what about the (1960-69) AFL? AFL/NFL stats are NFL stats. But in all honesty, its all weird. I think the 1960 - 1964 AFL stats are kind of video gamish. So you get someone like George Blanda making the HOF. But...I've always thought it was weird that later in the 60's...

Re: RIP Larry Allen

News reports have been using words like "sudden" and "unexpected." He was on vacation, not in a hospital, so I suspect a heart attack. He was one big dude when he was playing, and it didn't look like he'd slimmed down any. But like you said, a dominant force, one of the few guys ...

Re: Overtime margin of victory

Interesting---never really thought about a team winning an OT game by 14 points. Nice work!

Crazier than a time when the color of your skin determined whether you could play in the major leagues or not?

Reaching back into the '60s, I always thought you could've swapped out Bart Starr and Len Dawson.

Re: 1971 NFL season discussion

Why was he not coaching in 1973? I think he just got sick of the meddling from the front office, from what I have read. Makes sense, because GM Russ Thomas was an incompetent. Spot on. Joe didn't need the money---he was a very successful businessman---and he sure didn't need the aggravation. He gav...
