Re: 2022 Divisional round

The Saturday games were both excellent, true hard-fought playoff football. The Sunday games were two of the greatest games in NFL history, and despite my team losing, I haven't enjoyed watching football this much since the Rams-Chiefs game a few years ago. Set in even starker context when compared t...

Re: I Think We Might Have Spec Sanders' Name Wrong

All of this is awesome. So we have 3 different possible birthdays for Sanders, all the same date but different years: Jan 26, 1917 (draft card) Jan 26, 1918 (SSA/PFR) Jan 26, 1919 (Wikipedia/?) Based on the available evidence, I'd guess the 1918 one is the most likely to be reliable. In any case, it...

Re: I Think We Might Have Spec Sanders' Name Wrong

At this stage, I'd recommend that some note be made of the ambiguity on Sanders' PFR page; for example, in the line where nicknames are typically listed for players that have them (e.g. Slingin' Sammy), give it as "Orban Eugene Sanders (Spec or Speck)". More definitive contemporary evidenc...

Re: I Think We Might Have Spec Sanders' Name Wrong

I would think we would want to use the spelling that was most widely used or if there are awards that say "Spec" then that should be preferred. Bronislau Nagurski was called Bronco, Broncho, and Bronko interchangeably because it was, after all, a nickname. His estate uses "Bronko.&qu...

I Think We Might Have Spec Sanders' Name Wrong

All online materials relating to the football career of Orban Eugene Sanders, a running quarterback and defensive back with the New York Yankees primarily in the AAFC, who had a short but groundbreaking career and was a 2008 HOVG inductee, refer to him as going primarily by "Spec" Sanders....

Drew Bledsoe HOVG

This is an angle I haven't heard too much of. Bledsoe will forever be best known as the guy who got Pipped by Tom Brady, but he was a #1 overall pick whose career stats compare favorably to contemporaries like Jim Kelly, Troy Aikman, and Rich Gannon, minus the SB appearances. Wonder what others think.

Re: NEW USFL

Can't help but think it's going to be a similar deal as the AAF and XFL (which is also coming back under The Rock), but I'd be more than overjoyed if this USFL started making a play for top college talent. It will have a nostalgia draw that the other leagues lacked if nothing else.

Re: Stafford most underhonored player in NFL history?

Bart Starr is not only GB's best QB but the most underrated QB in NFL history in my opinion. Only Tommy Thompson, Charlie Conerly and incredibly, Terry Bradshaw enter the discussion. Bradshaw hardly ever gets talked about any more and he called his own plays ... Most underrated is definitely Friedm...

Whether you think Rodgers does/doesn't deserve to win the award for reasons stated, I think it's unambiguous that MVP voters shouldn't be talking publicly about their vote before it's presented, for any reason.

Re: Stafford most underhonored player in NFL history?

Given the choice, I'd pick him over Rivers, Ryan, Dalton....to me, Stafford's seemed a bit on the higher end of the B-level tier.
Dalton is the only one of those four I'd call a "B" quarterback. The rest are at least HOVG locks.
