Re: Best '70s game between two teams who DIDN'T make playoff
My goodness! Manning completed just two passes to non-running backs.

Re: 1977 Season: Pre-season expectations
Personal note: I'll be forever grateful to Petersen's for their detailed play-by-play account of the previous year's Super Bowl, which showed me the short-hand to keep play-by-play, which I used when I became a sportswriter, a job which then helped me become noticed enough to find other writing oppo...

NFLers who inked futures contracts with AFL
If I'm not mistaken Roman Gabriel and John Brodie were among those who did this and possibly Mike Ditka? Who did they sign with and how about other names/teams? Thanks for any input on this topice

Re: 1969 Vikings
I also agree that Kapp was what was missing in '70 and '71. Especially '70 since that is quite possibly the worst season ever in the merger era. Not quite as optimistic about '71 as he would've been on the back end of his career. But, Vikes could never pin down their QB issue after Kapp left until t...

Re: What are some memorable hold outs and the cause behind t
I guess Joe Kapp wasn't actually a hold out as it was a case of him and the Vikings not being able to come to an agreement on a new contract but I am absolutely positive that the Vikings would have won SB 5 and possibly 6 if he would have remained in purple. By the time Sir Francis came back in '72...

Re: What are some memorable hold outs and the cause behind t
Surprised no one mentioned John Riggins's holdout in 1980 after back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons. I'm bored, I'm broke, and I'm back. After missing the entire '80 season he went on to rush for around 4,500 yds and score half of his career 104 touchdowns over the next 5 seasons, including a 1239 14 TD...

Re: Silly Rules
Have they just started the new touchback rule this season. You know, kickoff lands in the end zone and the ball is automatically dead.

Thoughts on Johnny Rodgers and Anthony Davis
Both signed with "other" leagues out of college and ultimately never made much of an impact by the time they got to the NFL. I know both guys were kinda on the small side. Do you think they would've been better off signing with the NFL out of college instead of the CFL and WFL? Or are they...

Re: Early Release, But Long Career
How about Don Maynard? Cut by the Giants and went on to have a Hall of Fame career with the Jets and finishing with the Cardinals IIRC.

Re: Early Release, But Long Career
Didn't Lombardi say cutting Timmy Brown was his biggest mistake as far as a personnel decision?
