Magical thinking is right. The "mouth shield" has holes in it.

Look further down at the diagrams.
The "holes" are filtered and offset. There are two layers with a filter in between.

Not that I think this'll work but it is more complicated than it first appears.

My concern as a player would be with efficient breathing...

Not much different then having a visor on your motorcycle helmet, and not as bad as your team forfeiting two weeks of its schedule for a quarantine. If it's the plastic shield or no football at all, I know what I'd rather see this then a bunch of 2 to 0 games.

True, and when you're in TX in the summer and you're not actually moving on your bike it's stiflingly hot. Stop for gas and it's a race to get the helmet off. I'd totally prefer it to no football but I do wonder if we might see different or more frequent substitution patterns.
