NFL Exhibition Games

When did they go from 6 to 4 games? When the regular season schedule jumped from 14 to 16 games? Also, about when did the games become irrelevant? In other words when did the OTAs start become in vogue or the mini-camps?

They went from six to four in 1978. Games have become increasingly irrelevant in the last few years with the increase in injury concerns.

The NFL wants you to use the term "preseason" games. Since season ticket owners pay full price for the games they don't like the term "exhibition game", which, of course, they are!!
