Jimmy (Red) Phillips, who played 10 years with the Rams and Vikings (1958-67), died yesterday at the age of 79 in Auburn, AL:

Former Bears assistant Jim LaRue died on Sunday at the age of 89. He was the receivers coach for the Bills in 1976 and DB coach for the Bears from 1978-89, but his longest stint came at the college level as HC of Arizona from 1959-61:

He was one of the first Packers I had ever heard of. i.e. I distinctly remember having his football card when I was about 7. I always wondered why his production fell off a cliff. Injuries?

Charlie Sumner, who played with the Bears in the Vikings, and was an assistant with the Raiders for many years, died Friday at the age of 84. He was the coach who designed Jack Squirek's game-killing pick-six near the end of the first half of SB 18:
