1975 Eagles at RFK Final Week of the Season

Post by LeonardRachiele »

Final Game of 1975 at RFK Stadium.  The Eagles defeated  the Redskins in week three,  26 to 10.

After that victory, the Philadelphia Eagles won only two games in the next ten weeks. They came into RFK Stadium at 3-10.  Washington was 8-5 and out of the playoffs for the first time under Coach George Allen.  Billy Kilmer was inactive  with an injury.  Allen used Randy Johnson and then Joe Theisman at quarterback.  Perhaps the Redskins were flat but the Philadelphia defense was tremendous.

On the first possession,   Washington moved downfield inside the Eagles 20.   DB Randy Logan then stripped Mike Thomas of the football and recovered it.  Randy Logan was an underrated back during his career with Philadelphia.  QB Mike Boryla handed off to Po James for a 51 yard run. This was the longest carry of the season.  Boryla threw a 28 yard pass to Charlie Smith for a 7 to 0 lead.  After this, Washington used some penalties to set up a field goal.

With the score 7 to 3, the fun began.  Bill Bergey, Artimes Parker, and Frank LeMaster made pass interceptions.  Horst Mulhman kicked a field goal for a 10 to 3 halftime lead.  In the third quarter, Parker and John Outlaw made pass interceptions.  The Eagles got anther field goal for a 13 to 3 advantage.  In fourth quarter, the defense decided to score.  Joe Lavender stepped in front of the receiver and went 30 yards for a touchdown.  Late in the game, Frank LeMaster intercepted and ran 90 yards for another score.

The Eagles 26 to 3 win over Washington meant the first sweep of the Skins since 1961.   Great defensive game.
