Nick Lowery

Post by RyanChristiansen »

Placekicker Nick Lowery played 18 years in the NFL (1978-1996), his first year for the New England Patriots (1978) then 14 years for the Kansas City Chiefs (1980-1993) and three years with the New York Jets (1994-1996). He earned a spot in the Pro Bowl three times and was named all-pro twice.

During the span of his career, from 1978 to 1996, no other placekicker attempted more field goals than Nick Lowery. He scored more points (1,711) than the rest, 155 points more than the next guy, Gary Anderson (1,556), during that stretch. He had the highest field goal percentage (80.0%) among kickers who attempted at least 200 field goals during that period. He is just barely third in extra point percentage (98.9%) behind Eddie Murray (99.0%) and Gary Anderson (99.0%) during that period.
"Five seconds to go... A field goal could win it. Up in the air! Going deep! Tipped! Caught! Touchdown! The Vikings! They win it! Time has run out!" - Vikings 28, Browns 23, December 14, 1980, Metropolitan Stadium

Rupert Patrick's research into era adjusted kicking stats opened my eyes to the accomplishments of Nick Lowery. I would vote for him into the HoVG.

Yes, I was going to say the same thing. I remember him bringing up the simple fact that he wasn't ever a dome-kicker. Those are the ones you have to look at first! Very historically underrated, Lowery is!

For that very franchise to have had both he and Stenerud!

I remember Lowery was a whistleblower all the way back in 1994 regarding the Patriots and football tampering shenanigans at Foxboro (this was under Parcells though not Belichick)

He gave us 2 solid season in 1994 and 1995, but was done by 1996. Lowery was about all that was right with that eras team (nowadays we can't even get kicker right)
