1937 NFL Championship

Post by Mark »

I think I recall people stating in this forum that sometimes old newspapers actually had play by plays of games. Does anyone know if any had a play by play of the 1937 Washington-Chicago NFL Championship. I know it is a long shot but thought I'd ask.

I wouldn't be surprised if one or more of the Washington papers (Post, Star, Times-Herald, etc.) printed a play-by-play. At least a couple of them did after the Redskins won in 1942.

This didn't come from a newspaper, but I do have a play-by-play of the 1937 game; I'm pretty sure I found it at the Hall of Fame. So, assuming you're just interested in the play-by-play and don't care about the source, I think I can e-mail it to you by using a scanner they have at the local library. Or if you're just looking for some particular detail, let me know and I'll check on it for you.

No, I do not care about the source but I wouldn't want you to have to go to the library on my account. I can try and see if the Washington Post has it online. Thanks.

As it turns out I actually have part of the play by play and didn't know it. I have the book from the Washington Post that reprints old newspaper accounts of the Redskins. It has the play by play of the game vs the Giants they won in 1937 to win the East and the play-by-play of the 1942 title game. Unfortunately for the 1937 title game the play by play is to be continued on page 10 which they did not include. At least that tells me they did publish it but I can no longer locate the Washington Post archives online. Does anyone have the link?

Does anyone know where I might find a play by play of the 1938 NFL Championship between the Packers & Giants?

Thanks,

I can get into the Post archives through my local library. If you give me your e-mail address, I think I can send you the play-by-play as a pdf. (It doesn't seem to work with the message system on this site.)

I have it, and under normal circumstances I could scan it in at the library and e-mail it to you. But since the library is closed these days, that won't work. It occurs to me, though, that I got my cope at the Hall of Fame; if you get in touch with the reference library there, they'd probably send you a copy. Oh, but I guess there's a good chance that the Hall of Fame is also closed now. Well, things will change at some point, and then either of these methods will work.

Thank you so much Bob, very much appreciated. I can wait until all this is over, who knows, when, but it will be really cool to read that play by play someday...Thanks so much again,
