...new scheduling formula(s) albeit the addition of Jags & Panthers, or (re)adding that 31st team (Browns). Of course this changed the scheduling formula that had been in effect since '78.

As for a good matchup we did get to see because of this...Redskins (10-6) at Colts (13-3) in 1998. The previous year, Indy finished 5th-place in the AFC East as Wash finished in 4th in the NFC East. Had Jags & Panthers still not been around, both teams don't meet in '98.

As for what we missed out on...another example from '98 - the 14-2 SB-bound Falcons not playing the 10-6 Bills. Those two squaring off anytime after Buffalo's 0-3 start, especially with Flutie as the starting QB, would have been an interesting matchup. Also, in 2000, the Ravens & Giants missed each other in the regular season.

Other examples that come to mind?

hmm! This is confusing to me. I always thought the formula for interconference games during this period was... a team would play 4 games from an opposite conference division but “miss” the team that finished opposite from them in the standings. 1-5, 2-4 and 3-3 wouldn’t play each other. But in 1997, the Bills finished 4th and the Falcons 3rd. They’d be 2nd if they won the tie-breaker over the Panthers but they did not. (swept by Carolina)
