McDonald was a true character. His exuberant on-field demeanor was no act.

Twenty years ago or so, I went through a phase of requesting autographs via mail from some favorite players of my youth. McDonald replied with a handwritten postcard going over the highlights of his career -- and asking $6 for his autograph. I put it in my to-do pile, and within the month there was another postcard from him asking for that $6. The cash was in the mail the next day.

SixtiesFan wrote:Tommy McDonald was a famous player of the 1960's. I remember a quote from Sonny Jurgensen, recalling complaints that he threw to often to McDonald when both were with the Eagles. Sonny said something like:

"They said I threw to much to Tommy McDonald. Who did they want me to throw to, the guards and tackles?"
Jurgy threw a lot to Retzlaff, too.

Dave Anderson, Pulitzer Prize winning sportswriter for the New York Times, has died at the age of 89. Probably best known for covering baseball but covered all sports including football:

Among many other things, Anderson wrote a few early volumes of the NFL's Punt, Pass & Kick series for kids. That's how I got to know his byline.

For anyone who watched the "A Football Life" episode on Alan Page and found his life to be extraordinarily inspirational, in no small part because of the Page Education Foundation he started with his wonderful wife Diane Sims Page, then you like me you were saddened to hear of Diane Page's passing from breast cancer at the age of 74 on Sept. 29.

If you would like to contribute funds in her memory to help the Page Education Foundation, a Diane Page Legacy Fund has been established at https://www.page-ed.org/.
