Individual season team trivia

Post by Todd Pence »

One of the players on this 4-12 team would be a future Super Bowl MVP.

This team had 13 touchdown passes in their four wins, but just six in their twelve losses.

One of their wins snapped an eight-game losing streak during the season, and also a twelve-game losing streak against the opponent they beat.

The team's chief punt returner would later win a Super Bowl with another team, in which he scored a touchdown.

I was just going to start a thread like this...wow. I guess trivial minds think alike.

Although this team won only 4 games, their roster featured six players (5 active, 1 on military leave) who would go on to play in Super Bowls with other teams, as this franchise has never appeared in the Super Bowl itself. This "Super Bowl Six" group would make 11 individual Super Bowl appearances for 5 different franchises, sometimes facing off against one another. Their cumulative Super Bowls stats are:

5 Extra Points
2 Field Goals
33 rushing yards, 1 TD
9 receptions, 173 receiving yards
41 tackles (unofficial)

Name the team and season. Bonus for naming the six players.

Correct team and year...you've named 5 of the 6 players. I thought Malinchak was on the list for the 72 Skins, but he was injured and didn't actually play in the Super Bowl. The 'mystery' 6th player was the guy on military leave...which probably isn't represented on PFR. You might be able to deduce who he is by subtracting Henderson's and Nowatzke's receiving stats from the total.

Correct!

I was watching film of those 66 Lions and found it odd that so many of their players ended up in the Super Bowl a few years later. The team was pretty terrible, too. Imagine if your best backfield was Karl Sweetan, Amos Marsh & Tom Nowatzke...not exactly the greatest show on turf.

This team had a Hall of Fame defender on their roster. Some years earlier, he had faced the team's starting quarterback in a Super Bowl, when both were with different teams than their current one.

In addition, the team also had two defensive linemen who had earned Super Bowl rings with other teams.

Their offense dried up down the stretch when they scored just 36 points in their final six games. However, during this stretch, they won two games by shutout and held a third opponent without a touchdown.

I looked at which Hall of Fame defenders played for multiple teams, and then went from there.

So Ronnie Lott and Boomer Esiason are the initial players, and who doesn't like a trivia question that references Bill Pickel?
