Great offense/defense/ST-units that failed to make playoffs?

I’ll start with ‘85 Chargers, ’77 Gritz Blitz, and ’99 Panthers.

2002 Saints were ranked by Football Outsiders as having the best Special Teams unit of the last 30 years.

They somehow managed to miss the playoffs despite beating 3 playoff teams (GB/PIT/SF)

They had the NFC's #1 scoring offense and #3 overall (behind only OAK/KC) but a defense that allowed 20 points in 15 of 16 games did them in.

The 1963 Packers ranked 2nd in scoring offense (26.4 ppg) and scoring defense (14.7 ppg) and first in point differential (11.7 ppg) but finished second to the Bears in the Western Division. Of course, both of their losses were to the Bears.

The Bears really had incredible turnover differential that season which can move the needle materially.

Yeah, they intercepted Starr 4 times in the opening game. Starr missed the second game, when the Bears had 5 INTs, 3 against Bratkowski and 2 against John Roach.

1970 Rams: Allowed only 202 points, tied with the Lions for second-fewest in the NFL, in George Allen's last season. What killed them was a midseason tie at home to the Falcons, followed one week later by an inexplicable home loss to the Jets--who had Al Woodall at QB.

1971 Raiders: Led the NFL in scoring with 344 points, but had a bad late-season loss at Atlanta, along with a midseason tie at New Orleans to finish 8-4-2.

1972 Lions: Scored 339 points, second-best in the NFC, but got swept by both GB and Minnesota, also losing to Dallas to finish 8-5-1. Three of those losses were by four points or less.

1973 Chiefs: Allowed only 192 points, but finished 7-5-2. When they scored more than two touchdowns, they were 6-0-1, when they didn't, they were 1-5-1. In Week 12, they were in control over Cleveland with a 20-6 lead, then gave up a pair of fourth-quarter scores to end up in a 20-20 tie. The following Saturday, they got blown out by the Raiders, 37-7.

1975 Bills: Scored 420 points and scored 30 points or more nine times. losing two of those games to finish 8-6 after starting 4-0.

1977 Dolphins: Allowed only 197 points (second-best in the AFC) and help 10 opponents to 14 points or less. Got screwed by a quick whistle in Baltimore.
