I never saw that game, but wonder why Green Bay had such a tough time against a 7-6-1 49ers team. I would think that the Packers would have beaten San Francisco easily considering how important that game was for Green Bay.
Yeah, it seemed like the Packers had done the heavy lifting the previous week by beating Baltimore at Baltimore (Paul Hornung, 5 TDs)...the tie to SF nearly cost them their title game appearance. Bart Starr said that their last regular season games were usually West Coast trips against the Rams and/or Niners, and the Packers tended to relax and enjoy the weather on those trips.

Specific to the 1965 game, John Brodie said that the Niners changed their passing offense at halftime. They would usually have their receivers run complimentary routes...one guy curls, the other guy runs a wheel route behind him, etc. Instead, the Niners had both receivers run curls, or both guys go deep, and Brodie said this confused the Packer secondary and they had success. Brodie's statline 26-34-295 and 3 TDs in the 2nd half (and the typical Brodie 3 INTs) supports this.
