Lance Rentzel
Kind of surprised both he and Joey Heatherton are still around. Anyway, of his era I think Roy Jefferson and John Gilliam deserve to get in HOVG before he does. Rentzel is in a group with Danny Abramowicz and Ben Hawkins. But they were both with bad teams. Rentzel was with good teams. But I kind of ...

Re: Has there ever been a team like the Dallas Cowboys of the 21st century?
This game was sort of incredible. The Packers got some contributions from players who missed a lot of games this year. But Jayden Reed didn't even catch a pass. What an egg lay by the Cowboys. Perhaps unrivaled in playoff history. I tried to come up with a game that was this bad, by a home team. A f...

Re: Freezer Bowl
Though in game snow and rain can still provide challenges to footing, the issues with iced up fields appear to be a thing of the past. I don't remember seeing a field like 1975 AFC Championship game or Mistake By The Lake for a number of years.

Re: 1974 Rams
That was probably the best of the Chuck Knox LA Rams teams. If Harold Jackson had managed to score on that long pass reception in the 4th quarter they had a great shot at beating the Vikings and going to SB IX. A match up with the young Steelers would have proven interesting. They still turned the ...

Re: Sabbatical concept in NFL
George Blanda played 10 years for the Bears, then retired. After a year he played 16 more for the Oilers and Raiders.
Lou Groza sat out 1960 with a back injury after playing 14 years for the Browns. Then he came back as a kicker only for 7 more seasons.

Re: Disparity - 2023 Panthers
Right, all that is true ... but the disparity seems unusually large even given those factors. As well as the turnovers, there were only three times the defense turned the ball over on downs. This was also a league worst. Now teams only attempted going for it 10 times on fourth down, went for it sev...

Re: Disparity - 2023 Panthers
The opponent's starting position is 31.8 yard line, which is second worst in the league. They have given up 5 return TDs, worse than average but not worst in the league. The defense is good on a yards basis. But they have given up 25 rushing TDs, worst in the league. 11 turnovers is also a league w...

Re: 1962 AFL draft mystery
Jacque MacKinnon, listed D33 in the 1962 AFL draft for San Diego, played for the 1961 Chargers and signed with them May 17. Duane Allen, listed D33 in the 1962 AFL draft for Denver, played for the 1961 Rams. Everisto Nino, listed D31 in the 1962 AFL draft for Dallas, was signed by the 1961 49ers on ...

Re: question about the Rozelle rule
The Dolphins did get comp for Csonka, Kiick, and Warfield when they returned to the NFL. When Csonka signed with the Giants on April 7, 1976 (after Joe Robbie scoffed at Csonka's demand for a five year, $2M contract...which, as it turned out, would have been a stretch for what was left in Zonk's ta...
