Re: Who is the most successful weak armed QB?

Yeah, I discussed this in a separate thread a while ago, what's interesting is that the guy who throws the ball the hardest doesn't always have the best deep ball. In the modern game I think Colin Kapernik is the best example, he clearly puts a lot of mustard on the ball but the trajectory is just t...

Re: WFL BOX SCORES

Very impressive. Tod Maher's statistical data is truly the ultimate word on the subject. He and Mark Speck were the authors of the World Football League Encyclopedia in 2006, published by St. Johann Press. There's still a lot of anecdotal information about the league in archived newspapers and in t...

Re: ....60 years ago today

Coach, what do you think Ollie's numbers would've looked like if he were used more lime the Titans used Chris Johnson. 20 touches vs 10, rushing at least. He was always doing everything, rushing, returning, defending (as you point out in your book) what if they'd said, carry it 20 times a ballgame? ...

Re: Player movement in the 1950's

The other cool / interesting aspect of the era was the more fluid movement between the NFL and CFL, be it Gene Brito, Arnie Weinmeister, Bud Grant, Eddie LeBaron, Cookie Gilchrist (a little later), Bill Glass, etc. Some real quality front line players chose to leave to the CFL, ok Cookie didn't real...

Re: NFLgames postponed or moved due to weather

Detroit or Washington? Wow!!! That's like throwing away money. There are more New York people in Florida than there are Floridians. Why not Tampon Bay or Jacksonville or even Miami where it would be just like going to Brooklyn or Long Island? All the Florida teams are on the road. I bet they would ...

Re: How were Quarterbacks rated before QB Rating?

Don't recall the details, but as I recall they used the same basic catagory as are in the current rating, ranked players on each of them. Added the rankings - IE: first in completion percentage, 2nd in YPC, 3rd in TD %, 4th in Int % and the player with the lowest value was the winner, so another QB ...

Re: Usage of Ollie Matson

He's one of literally only a handful of backs I can think of who, when he broke into the open, you absolutely knew he was gone. Really maybe only Bo Jackson was like that. He routinely outran defenders who had angles on him. There were a handful of similar guys - why weren't they used more - from th...

Re: Kicking is just too easy

I still like the horizontal top bar idea, a bar on top of the goal post, and it has to go inside the rectangle to be good. It may be apocryphal, but I read a story about Efren Herrera, who was a soccer player at UCLA when he was asked to try out as a placekicker for the football team. In the tryout...

and no one has ever stood cooler while standing under center. The posts are appreciated "Saban". This is a great observation and one I be always had trouble pinning down, but he just looked so comfortable and cool under center. Like John Wayne sauntering up tk a horse or just like someone...

Re: 1950's Detroit Lions

Hard to recall a franchise collecting so much value in a single season. a few would be the obvious 74 Steelers, 65 Bears, 83 Bears, but what's great about the Lions is how they sourced those guys from all over the place as opposed to just a great draft. Another interesting Lion year is 58 when they ...
