Re: Reconciling the whole Browns/Ravens issue

Looking at the lineups, it appears that about 26 of 1995's Browns didn't become 1996 Ravens. Five starters on offense and seven of the 11 defensive starters for the '95 Browns didn't start for the Ravens in '96, and punter Greg Montgomery and returner Jermaine Lewis didn't go to Baltimore. Not to m...

Re: '68 Packers expectations

In that first Vikings game, the Packers were plagued by penalties for 90 yards. In addition, they didn't even get past the Minnesota 35 until after halftime. Finally, the key play of the game came in the third quarter when the Vikings took a risk with a 16-6 lead. They went for it on fourth and inche...

Re: '68 Packers expectations

The Packers were still considered a formidable team, though some people started freaking out during the PRESEASON, when the Pack lost their first two exhibition games against NFL teams  --they had easily won the College All-Star game. Only Max McGee and Fuzzy Thurston had retired, so some were ...

Re: Historic high-scoring TIE, OT games

That must have been interesting to watch. I think the oddity would be in finding a low-scoring AFL game. Even shutouts seem to have been infrequent in the AFL in the 1960s. In the 10 years of the AFL, there was only one game in which both teams were held under 10 points. On 11/10/63 at Fenway Park,...

Tommy Lewis

While he only played in the CFL, this death seemingly is worth mentioning: Tommy Lewis, who literally came off the bench for Alabama to tackle Rice's Dicky Maegle in the 1954 Cotton Bowl, died yesterday at the age of 83: http://blog.chron.com/sportsupdate/2014/10/tommy-lewis-the-man-who-made-cotton-...

Re: Historic high-scoring TIE, OT games

Surprisingly, Thursday will mark the 50th anniversary of the highest scoring tie ever -- October 16, 1964, Oakland Raiders 43 @ Boston Patriots 43 http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/196410160nwe.htm It was a wild final minute of action: the Patriot touchdown came with just 48 seconds l...

Re: Historic high-scoring TIE, OT games

MatthewToy wrote:The first NFL regular season tie was a 35-35 game between Denver and Pittsburgh in 74. Odd that they couldn't score at all in the extra quarter.
The only time either team came close was with just over three minutes left in OT, when Denver's Jim Turner was wide on a 41-yard FG attempt.

Re: The Jets of the 80's...best Super Bowl shot?

1982 definitely. They were coming off a huge win, beating Oakland in the divisional playoff. That's when the Dolphins "accidentally" forgot to put the tarp on the Orange Bowl field the night before a huge rainstorm, with Miami then shutting out the suddenly impotent Jets. As far as Michael...
